Oscars Menswear 2017

The Oscars Menswear Looks You Need To Know About

This article originally appeared on AskMen UK.

By now you have probably seen what an absolute lunatic event this year’s Oscars were, in the simultaneously greatest and most terrible way possible. People will be talking for weeks about the La La LandMoonlight snafu, but let’s take ourselves away from the drama and soothe our nerves with some of the absolute best suiting (and a smidge of the worst) on the red carpet. The boys really turned out last night.

Casey Affleck

A scruffy look beard that has secretly been groomed to perfection? Check. Perfectly tousled 'scraggly' hair? Check. An immaculately tailored Louis Vuitton tux? Check. Best Actor winner Casey Affleck nails the groomed/not groomed look.

Ryan Gosling

How did Gosling screw this up so badly? He is an extremely handsome man with the perfect frame for tailoring. He has demonstrated on numerous occasions how well he can dress. The suit is fine, but the ruffle shirt? It’s like a fashion ode to Vienetta. Maybe it seemed like a fun, silly gag, but if you have to explain the joke then it’s a bad joke.

Mahershala Ali

Pairing a black suit with a black shirt doesn’t often look great. You mostly come off looking like a Johnny Cash wannabe or a 90s media executive, but is anyone going to say this isn’t working on newly-minted Oscar-winner Ali?

Dev Patel

Brit boy Dev Patel, nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for Lion, does it for the UK in a Burberry silk peak lapel tuxedo jacket and black trousers. Teamed with some serious heart-throb hair, the man is all charm.

Damien Chazelle

As the youngest ever winner of the Best Director gong for La La Land, 32-year old Damien Chazelle (seen here with actress Olivia Hamilton) makes filmmaking seem easy. In a navy wool mohair tux by Burberry, he also pulls off red carpet style with ease. Can he do any wrong?

Jimmy Kimmel

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel had a lot resting on his shoulders this year, handling both Trump jokes and La La LandMoonlight gaffes like a consummate professional. The show might not have gone so smoothly, but that Tom Ford tuxedo certainly did.

Andrew Garfield

Best Actor nominated Andrew Garfield teams a retro-style Tom Ford black tuxedo with a similarly throwback hairdo. He may have been nominated for Hacksaw Ridge, but he looks like he's about to do jazz hands à la La La Land

John Legend

Bow down to the talent and the style: John Legend wears a slick Burberry navy wool mohair three-piece suit during his special La La Land medley.

The Rock

When you’re as big as The Rock, choosing a suit can often be about trying to minimise the degree to which you look like a bouncer. By wearing this blue velvet jacket he’s softened his huge frame and looks more Bond than henchman.

Chris Evans

Another really good blue. There’s not much more to say about it other than it’s a great cut, a great fit and accessorising with Jeremy Renner really makes the suit’s black accents pop.

Denzel Washington

This just plain doesn’t fit. The jacket is shapeless and the trousers are billowy and much too long. Honestly, it looks like he hired it on his way to the ceremony and the shop was out of his size.

Justin Timberlake

JT is in Tom Ford, which obviously means the cut of his suit is second to none. What you can’t quite see in this photo is that the fabric of the suit has a subtle polka dot pattern. Just because you go classic black doesn’t mean you can’t add some interest.

Pharrell Williams

Is Pharrell’s ‘ringmaster at the circus of the damned’ look kind of objectively ridiculous and costumey? It is. Is he also pulling it off? Entirely. The man wore an over-sized Mountie hat for months. His ability to make the complicated work is at final-boss level.

Terrence Howard

Terrence Howard has arrived at the Oscars looking like he’s about to retire to his mahogany-panelled drawing room for a scotch and peruse his hunting trophies. But is he making that work? He looks absurd, yet also sort of great. 2017’s nutty Oscars has got us all confused.

Michael Shannon

Much respect to Michael Shannon for pulling off the trickier double-breasted tuxedo and giving it some Godfather flare with a carnation in his lapel.

Riz Ahmed

This blue Zegna is perfect on Ahmed. The colour, somewhere between cornflower blue and navy, subtly marks him out from the various other, generally darker blue suits on show (although we’ve no idea what’s up with Jackie Chan and the pandas).

David Oyelowo

Oyelowo is extremely good at suits. Remember the red one he wore in 2015? The white tux can look very waiter-on-a-fancy-cruise-ship if done sloppily but this is cut to perfection and about the cleanest look of the night.

Ashton Sanders

Moonlight star Ashton Sanders is also going hard on the double-breasted look. Those enormous lapels might look ridiculous if Sanders were not, a) young and skinny enough to carry off most things, b) accessorising it with hefty amounts of attitude.

Sunny Pawar

You wish you had the panache to successfully team these shoes with black tie, like 8-year old Lion star Sunny Pawar. But there really are some things that should only be attempted when you are have nuclear levels of cute.
