Denver will be the new mecca for potsmokers across the world

Denver has a new house of worship—if by worship you mean smoking a ton of weed. The International Church of Cannabis is set to open on 4/20 as a home to “Elevationists.” According to Steve Berke, the church’s new landlord, “Elevationists believe that one can find the path to spiritual fulfillment through the ritual use of cannabis.”

The 113-year-old church, which has been colorfully renovated as a more apt place for stoners, is being billed as “the first large venue in the world where adults can legally consume cannabis in a social environment.” It won’t sell marijuana or accessories, according to 9News, but it will host guest speakers, artists, comedians, musicians, and documentary film screenings.

The mural on the outside of the church was painted by Kenny Scharf, an artist best known for his work in the ‘80s in New York’s East Village. Inside, Spanish artist Okuda San Miguel was enlisted for the vibrant designs on the ceiling. “It’s a visceral experience to walk into a 113-year-old church and see this much color,” Berke told 9News.

And it probably looks pretty cool when you’re stoned, too.

Despite the marijuana affiliation, Berke insists: “this is not just a bunch of lazy stoners getting together to get high. We really want to impact [the] neighborhood. We want to do great things for the community.”
