The Pirates of the Caribbean star is more on brand than ever before.

Personal style is an important part of any celebrity brand. Kanye West, Shia LaBeouf, Ryan Gosling, and Justin Theroux (among many others) have all curated a strong personal aesthetic, meaning that by now we could pretty much recognize them even if they had paper bags over their heads (a move which Shia sometimes pulls). But of all the most consistently on-brand celebrity wardrobes, Johnny Depp’s is on higher plane.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star began synthesizing his signature look—a dreamlike, kooky rock ‘n’ roll shaman pirate on mushrooms—back in the mid-nineties. And at 54 he’s got it distilled down to seven-point perfection—black leather, piled-on jewelry, head scarf, novelty hat, worn-to-death biker boots, rocker goatee, and distressed denim. Today arriving at Haneda airport in Japan, Depp greeted throngs of fans in what might be the most Johnny Depp outfit ever.

All the old favorites were there, plus a few bonuses. In his hand, as though he was about to lead a road-side sing along, Depp carried an acoustic guitar because, well, why not!? And matching his white safety pin earrings he wore a pair of white rimmed aviator shades. Even Depp’s T-shirt reinforced his style narrative—by way of another famous soulful man named Johnny. Very few men could get away with wearing this outfit, though there are lessons to be learned here. Mostly that you should try wearing some rings and if you’re going to dress like everyone’s favorite roady uncle, stick to grays, blacks, and browns.

But seriously, despite the over-the-top nature of his accessories, Depp’s fit holds up thanks to its minimal color palette and commitment to artfully distressed leather. And it’s great to see that as the fashion world continues to morph in new directions, some things always stay the same.
