Every day of every month at GQ, we give you advice on What to Wear Today, like letting you know what shirt your wardrobe is missing. From power suits to sporty sweats, we’re here to help you look your very best in every circumstance. Up today: a right-now take on a wardrobe icon that you can wear almost anywhere, all year round.

A military shirt is one of those true wardrobe icons that never, ever goes out of style. Just look at Justin Timberlake in the pages of GQ, above. Over a decade has gone by since we took that photo and you know what? We still endorse that style move, down to the singer’s boyish buzzcut.

Of course, different spins on wardrobe icons come and go. While a more fitted military shirt, like what Timberlake is wearing, always looks good, we’re also feeling styles that are baggy, boxy, and all patched up. You can blame on menswear’s current infatuation with embellishment (thanks, Gucci) and the shift towards looser, freer fits for that.

If you’re not much of a shirt-and-tie guy, you’ll like these more casual styles which you can treat like a shirt or jacket depending on what it’s like outside (see below). They’re comfortable, a bit badass, and definitely require fewer muscles than Timberlake’s Magic Mike look. Of course, don’t quit the gym on account of clothes getting bigger or anything. In the grand scheme of things, it won’t be long before your staples all look shrunken again. And anyway, it’s still swimsuit season.
