Last-Minute Gifts To Score Some Points On National Girlfriend Day
Unbeknownst to practically everyone, August 1 is National Girlfriends Day, because every day has to be some kind of quirky national holiday apparently. For some of us, every day is girlfriend day because we love them so damn much. For others, the same is true but for, uh, very different reasons…
Its National Girlfriend Day and I have been reminded of my lonely life. I’m just a lonely potato in search of love
— daf (@daf_ab) August 1, 2016
The really messed up part? It’s not actually National Girlfriends Day, but rather National Girl_Friends Day — i.e., a day for women to celebrate the special bond of friendship between themselves. So she goes out with her friends, grabs some drinks, and comes home happy. You’re off the hook!
Haha, no. If your ladyfriend happens to be aware of the “holiday,” there’s a 100% chance she thinks it’s a day meant to celebrate your deep (albeit unofficial) love for one another. But even if she’s not aware of it, imagine how good you’ll look when you surprise her with a thoughtful gift she didn’t even expect to get. Kind, small gestures like that are how you get on her good side. Maybe she’ll return the favor on October 3, which is National Boyfriends Day (and actually means what it says it means).
If you’re struggling to come up with last-minute gift ideas, relax. Not only do we have a bevvy of ideas for you, but these all happen to be excellent deals as well.
Kate Spade new york Idiom Collection “Heart of Gold” Bangle Bracelet
God, shopping for jewelry is such a mindf*ck that unless it’s to propose marriage, you’re honestly better off avoiding it in most cases. But if you go that route, the K.I.S.S. axiom applies: Keep It Simple, Stupid. A gold bangle like this is as simple as it gets, doesn’t clash with anything and is very fashionable at the moment.
The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale
Have an idea of what she likes, but nothing specific in mind? High thee to Nordstrom, where their MASSIVE anniversary sale is still on through August 6. Nordstrom is a sufficiently high-end retailer without being stupidly aspirational a la Barney’s, and the cool thing about the sale is that rather than old or overstocked items, they’re steeply discounting new styles for this fall.
Molton Brown Immersive Samphire & Eucalyptus Body Wash & Lotion Gift Set
Women love slathering themselves in good-smelling salves and creams, so if you’re gonna go that route you may as well save yourself a little coin (and earn some style points) by going for a specially boxed gift set. This particular fragrance is a limited release, but if you know her to prefer other scents, by all means click around. There are a bunch available.
Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 Instant Camera
If your old lady’s more of a social butterfly than someone who collects handbags and baubles (or is both, whatever), she may appreciate a new way to capture memories that isn’t Instagram. This mini camera actually spits out a physical photo, conveniently sized to fit nicely on a desk, fridge or in a wallet. It might make you feel sad and/or old that actual photographs have been reduced to a novelty, but at least they’re still around.
$20 Off First Winc Membership Order
Wine sales have been on the rise for years now, and for good reason: it’s stronger than beer, easier to drink than liquor and it tastes great. If your girlfriend’s down to have a glass of wine or 6 now and again, she’ll appreciate a service like Winc that keeps new wines coming monthly. Just answer a few questions designed to identify your (her) tastes, and choose packages of red, white or both. Four bottles will be delivered (free) to your door every month, and they’re on the affordable end, as low as $13. But as a new member, you’ll get $20 off your first order — plus you can drink it too. That’s a win-win.
Coach Daisy Rivet Square Pilot Sunglasses
Coach, it seems, is cool again. Not that you’ll necessarily see girls sporting purses covered in the big “C” logo anymore, but the brand itself has gone back to its more classic roots. These sunglasses will flatter just about any face, and they’re almost half off the regular price. In fact, most of their accessories are, so if you know for sure these aren’t her taste, there’s plenty more where they came from.
Kamojo Mule Moscow Mule Copper Mug Set
Moscow mules have been THE drink the past two summers (care to elaborate as to why, Mr. President?), and I know this because the signature copper mugs are everywhere. Usually they’re round and have only a tiny handle, meaning your hand gets cold and the drink gets warm and you might as well just play some Russian roulette because your life is ruined. These, however, are taller and have real handles, so you can enjoy the copper aesthetic without the hassle. These also come with copper straws/stirrers, and their size makes them good for mint juleps, too. Yum!
MVMT Beverly Watch
For whatever reason, buying watches isn’t nearly as fraught as buying jewelry — I guess the added functionality gives you some flexibility. MVMT watches are very of the moment, owing mostly to their clean, elegant design in stylish palettes (their massive push to be featured on countless popular instagram accounts doesn’t hurt, either). This design in particular mixes probably the absolute hottest colors of 2017: grey, white and rose gold.
Design Your Own Sequin Jewelry
If you really want to do jewelry but fear screwing it up, you have an out: adding a personal touch. Sequin’s whole thing is that people can custom design talisman necklaces that happen to be very in right now, and it’s very straightforward: pick a chain, and then add up to four charms to go on it (they offer about 60 to choose from). A quick browsing of her jewelry box will tell you if she prefers gold or silver (rose gold is also an option), and if you can’t settle on a few charms she would obviously like, that’s not a good sign.
