Career Advice – Build a Bio That Sells JD March 12, 2015 Feature News, Tips 478 Creating a solid professional bio is one of the best ways to open the door to a better career. It forces you think about the skills you want to highlight, and gives you a kind of “elevator pitch” to send to new contacts. Meredith Fineman, writing in Harvard Business Review, lays out what you need to think about while sprucing up your professional bio. Be consistent. Create one bio that you can use across all your profiles. You’ll need to edit it down for some places like social media and have a longer version for other uses, like speaking opportunities. Keep your information updated. Put a reminder in your calendar for every few months to check that your information is as accurate as possible. Add in links to boost your digital presence. These links can include your personal site, an online portfolio of your work, and your social media profiles. Use active voice to draw focus to your achievements. This includes avoiding verbs like “trying to” or “attempting”, say what you are doing. Include one or two calls to action. Your professional bio is your chance to direct people to your most important projects or work. Constantly searching for career opportunities can be exhausting. Make it a bit easier and take the time now to create an excellent, polished bio that you can use to passively promote yourself.
