While Apple doesn’t like to frequently release new models of the same product, when it does update product lines the results tend to be noteworthy. Take the latest upgrade to the 15-inch MacBook Pro and the new version of the 27-inch iMac announced this week as an example.

Both these machines had significant overhauls that make them worth a second look for any Apple fan. Let’s start with the 15-inch MacBook Pro: Apple has given it a Force Touch trackpad with haptic feedback like its smaller brother, so you get better control and more realistic motion.

The MacBook also now comes with faster flash storage (apparently 2.5x faster than the old versions) and a longer battery life, which can now play up to nine hours of iTunes movies. The laptop received a graphics upgrade, too. Now the two new versions, 2.2GHz and 2.5 GHz, cost $1,999 and $2,499, the two highest tiers possible for this MacBook line.

The iMac received changes as well. Previous models included the much-vaunted 5K resolution screen for the 27-inch Mac, promising insanely high resolution specs for all your computer work or gaming. However, the new display also led to some sharp jumps in price. Thankfully Apple has noted that many people may want the new screen but in a more affordable package. The new model offers a downgraded Intel Core i5 process, down to 3.3GHz, along with 8GB of memory, 1TB of storage, and two of the Thunderbolt ports – as opposed to the 1TB fusion drive of the higher model. In all, this new model will cost $1,999, around $500 lower in price than the old version.

The pricing moves are interesting. Apple increased the tiers for MacBook Pros but lowered the tiers for iMac, suggesting that the company is working toward a middle ground when it comes to price, appealing to those professionals who want either a super high-quality laptop or a more affordable, but still graphically superior desktop for their animation and graphic design work.
